We term the Mule Note as the piece of Paper currency that got printed with either Front Plate or Back Plate different from the Originally Designed.
This mismatch makes that batch of notes different from rest of the issue. Sometime such mismatch is visible across the issue (Especially Single Prefix Issues). As the printing of Mule notes isn’t treated as an error by RBI press, they are not replaced by corresponding Star Notes (Replacement Notes) of that batch. Mule notes are valid currency or legal tender and are placed in circulation by RBI.
Mule Notes isn’t an official terminology given by RBI or Central Bank, but is used widely by Notaphilist across globe for its characteristics different from regular notes.
Their unique and distinguish features make them collectible for Prefix, Errors and Mega-Prefix collectors and often having its rarity, if not printed in a wider range/quantity.
Mule Notes have been the subject of research too, for many collectors and the term or its collection has broadly evolved only in past 5-6 years.
